Counting the Omer

Sunday April 9, 2023 is יוֹם הֲנָפַת הָעֹמֶר Yom Hanafat Ha'omer (Day of the Waving of the Sheaf). When the Temple stood this day marked the official commencement of the grain harvest (Deuteronomy 16:7) and sheaves of barley were cut and brought to the Temple as a wave-offering (Leviticus 23:9-14). This day also marks the beginning of the 50-day count to חַג הַשָּׁבֻעוֹת Shavuot (Pentecost; Feast of Weeks). Yom Hanafat Ha'omer is counted as Day 1 and Shavuot as Day 50.

There are different methods of counting the 50 days. According to some the commandment 'and you shall count for yourselves fifty days' means to simply observe the 50th day as Shavuot while others actually declare out loud the number on each of the fifty days. A medieval Karaite Jewish practice combines two different methods of declaring the daily count. The first method is the counting of seven weeks. Each day, the number of the week and the number of the day in the week are declared. So for example, the first day is 'first day of the first week'. The second counting method used is an overall number for each day. In this method Day one is 'the first day' and Day 25 is 'the twenty-fifth day'. These two methods are used to satisfy the commandment to count seven weeks (Deuteronomy 16:9) as well as the commandment to count fifty days (Leviticus 23:16). Below is a list of the counting for each day.

  • Mona Allen says:

I am new and still learning how to count the omer. I am trying to study the Scriptures like you do just as it’s written not adding to or taking away. I have a question.?
Isn’t Shavuot and Pentecost 2 completely different things? From what I gather Shavuot is counted from sometime after the Feast of Passover starting 50 days and Pentecost starts 50 days from Easter. But on most years Passover and easter fall on two completely separate days? So how can they be the same?. Thank you for teaching us deeper understanding about Scripture.
    Shalom. Mona.

    • Yoseph says:

Lev 23:16 ‘Until the morrow after the seventh Sabbath you count fifty days, then you shall bring a new grain offering to YHWH.
(Notice the 50 days ends on the morrow after a SHABBAT’.) Not in the middle of the week. The Sabbath’s being counted are weekly Sabbath. If you start from Nisan 16 the 50 days will not conclude on the morrow after a SABBATH.

Lev 23:15 ‘And from the morrow after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering, you shall count for yourselves: seven completed Sabbaths.

Lev 23:16 ‘Until THE MORROW AFTER THE SEVENTH SABBATH you count 50 days, then you shall bring a new grain offering to YHWH.

    • Holly Arnold says:

Shavuot (“weeks” – as in “count 7 weeks”) is the same thing as Pente (“50”)cost.

They are the same feast that occurs 50 days (aka 7 weeks + 1 day) after Passover.

The Christian day of Easter often lines up with but does not always coincide with Passover.

Passover occurs 14 days after the first New Moon (Rosh Chodesh) that occurs after the barley in Israel is “aviv” – see Dr Gordon’s prior teachings on aviv (basically it means the barley is almost ripe and will be by the time of the observance of Passover).

The modern Hebrew term for the season of Spring is “Aviv” but it refers to the agricultural observation, not the season that comes after winter.

Easter is determined to be the first Sunday after the first New Moon after the Spring solstice (yes, it’s super confusing!!).

So some years they coincide and some years they are vastly different. This year they were 3 days apart. Next year they are a full month apart as determined using computer software and calculations and all kinds of tradition on both sides.

Bottom line, though – Shavuot and Pentecost are the same thing. At Mt Horeb (aka Sinai) the Torah was given when fire fell on the mountain on Shavuot it is believed. We are taught that the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) fell on Shavuot (Pentecost) and are given imagery of flaming tongues of fire. It’s not a coincidence.

      I hope this helps!! Shalom!

  • Robert Kennedy says:

    Shalom,
I have a question regarding this year’s date of Yom Hanafat Ha’omer. Was the crescent moon not sighted on the evening of April 2nd? If so, then when is Yom Hanafat Ha’omer in relation to Chag HaMatzot?

  • TheDailyWarrior says:

    Correctly counting:
There was a 3-week window of when the barley could be ready and THAT is why there is NO DATE assigned – just the day after the weekly Sabbath.
So let’s go with the current default of the 16th being the day of the wave sheaf offering.
This makes the 17th (FROM the 16th – the day AFTER the Sabbath). Starting with this day makes the first Sabbath NOT “full/complete,” so this ipso facto makes the week of 23rd-29th the 1st “full/complete” week.
This in turn, makes the 15th day of the 3rd month Shavuot!
But! … This is NOT the end of the count – as the Fenton translation correctly states!
Now we are told to count 50 MORE days “FROM the day after” Shavuot – which makes the 17th (once again!) the start of a count.
When all these weeks/days are added together, this puts us right at the beginning of the summer wheat harvest!! When the grapes (and its “new wine” juice) and other fruits are ready.

  • GabriHela says:

Shalom! I am from Honduras and I’m trying to understand how to do this count according to Scriptures and I don’t have anyone to guide me, so I would appreciate if you could explain to me how Lev 23:14 meets with the Count of Omer, especially in the part when says: “… until the selfsame day…”

In vers 11, it says the sheaf should be waved on the morrow after the sabbath, and verses 12-13 explain the offers in the same day. But in verse 14 states that until that precise day we shouldn’t be eating bread (and other things) and I would think this also has to do with the commandment to be able to eat only matzá, but the feast of unleavened bread lasts until 4 days after that. So, I’m wondering the “why” of those words: “… until the selfsame day…” if you are not supposed to be eating any bread even beyond that period, and for me this is important because everything has to fit in order to understand and do the count correctly. Thanks in advance.

    • Jennifer says:

I asked the same question this year. I was told that it meant you could only eat of the grain from the past year until first fruits, than on the day of first fruits you eat of the new grain. You still don’t eat bread, just the new grain. That is the only answer I got. But I got it from a very good source as far as I believe. I am still having a hard time with how many start the counting of the Omer from the 16th of Nisan. Even Jews who are Yeshua centered. It doesn’t line up with the resurrection. I have always believed the morrow after the sabbath would make it the Sunday or the 17th of Nisan

      • GabriHela says:

Thanks for your answer… It is still confusing huh? they seem to be interpretations or maybe according to traditions. With respect to the start of the counting of the Omer, I did have a hard time, but with the Scriptures and the information provided by some people involved with Nehemia, yes, you are right, the morrow after the sabbath would make it the Sunday but to me that would be the 18th of Nisan (or Aviv), because remember that the days are counted starting the sunset, so for this year Pesaj (14th Aviv) starts on tuesday 7th until wednesday 8th sunset, then the Unleavened Bread Feast would start immediately after that (on 15th Aviv – between wednesday and thursday), so, if you keep counting until the morrow after the sabbath (between saturday and sunday), that would make it 18th of Aviv/Nisan… I believe… 🙂

Nehemia, have you changed your view on the parameters for the commencement of the counting of omer. • Justin says:

So tomorrow (May 24) is Shavuot? Does this mean that “the morrow after the seventh sabbath” (Lev. 23:16) should be taken to mean the seventh Sunday from the Sunday that fell during Unleavened Bread? Because it sounds to me as a non-Hebrew speaker like the text is saying that the count is based on the weekly sabbath which fell during Unleavened Bread, which would put the morrow after first sabbath on Apr. 12, which this year would make Shavuot occur on May 31. I know this discrepancy would only be an issue about once every 7 years, but it would be nice to have it resolved.

  • Tom Eubank says:

How could we start the count on Sunday April 5th when there had not been a “Sabbath” during the Feast yet? Sunday was day one of the Feast and a High Sabbath but the first Sabbath “during” the Feast would not be until Saturday April 11th. The day of Passover is separate from the actual Feast of Unleavened Bread which starts on the 15th of month one. HELP, why are the simple instructions so butchered today?

  • John says:

I left this comment on the truth of Shavout but later noticed Nehemia hadn’t been there for some time so excuse the redundancy. Thanks

First of all thanks Nehemia for all the work and time you put into things. I have been following/enjoying/learning from your writings and thoughts for maybe 15 years now. I rarely comment, it never really seems that I have anything to say out side of what has been said. But a ‘THANKS’ is long over due.
This conversation did bring up a question that occurred to me only now. What if the Sabbath that kicks off the counting has nothing to do with Passover/unleavened? You mentioned that the three groups Pharisees Essene and Sadducee, all agreed that it was concerning this week of unleavened but no verses, proofs or reason was given. What if the very first premise is wrong? Everything about this discussion is being based on that assumption!
Deut 16 tells us that one is to start from putting the sickle to the grain. That is the only verse in all of this that I can see that gives us a definitive time frame. In a year that the month started later then other years the Aviv would have already been being harvested possibly weeks before the count started. I.e. the month of aviv did not start because the grain was not ready. So the harvest started at the end of the 13th? month. Thus you have potentially 2-3 weeks that the sickle has been at the grain before the ‘sabbath of the week of unleavened’ clearly not in line with Deut 16.
Lev 23:15 says from the day after the Sabbath. What if in all simplicity one was to start counting the day after the Sabbath-which sabbath?- when/after you put your sickle to the grain. What if it has nothing to do with Passover and unleavened other then overlap some years? So can I ask that we start from square one?
–Why does it have to be a Sabbath connected to Passover/Unleavened?–
What if the holidays in question Omer and Savout simply floated according the beginning of the harvest exactly as the month of Aviv floats with the Aviv?
Josh 5 would fit as well if they had started harvesting earlier that week then after the sabbath offered the wave offering/omer then started eating.
I realize this puts a spanner/wrench in the works of deciding the month of Aviv as well, which may put a shiver up some spins. But it seems to me to be a question worth addressing.
There seems to be more of an interest in making sure that this particular sabbath falls in unleavened week -which is not written anywhere- rather then begin counting when (the sabbath after?) you put the sickle to the grain, which is clearly written.
sorry to muddy the waters just ask’n

    • Joy Lyle says:

I actually have wondered the same thing. Thank you for asking it. My thoughts were that the scripture ties the day of the waving of the omer to the calculation of Shavuot, without mentioning anything about the necessity of it being during the Feast of Unleavened Bread. The Father is so specific about everything….

  • Clea Belcher says:

The manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the new grain.(Joshua 5:12) It seems to me that this is a sign that their obedience was verified from heaven. Also, as it is in 2015, this is a reminder of those great events when the children of Israel entered the land.

  • Neville says:

Just to be clear, in my longer comment, I’m trying to see how the sabbath in “the morrow of the sabbath” can be outside of ULB, just working from scripture. The Pharisee/Essene/Sadducee tradition can either support or violate the scripture, but shouldn’t drive the issue. I hope I’m making sense here.

    • Monique says:

Dear Neville, I think you’re making sense. We (my family) see it the same way. This year we also start counting from the day after the 7th Day of ULB. If you “only” take the bible as a source, I don’t see how I can come to another conclusion.

      • Neville says:

I saw a comment on this from Chaim Goldman, referring to Nehemia’s holding up Joshua 5:1-11 as the key to unlock this question. I remember now hearing him (Nehemia) talk about this, but do not remember seeing it in the turth-of-Shavuot article (maybe I just completely missed it). In that text, the Israelites ate of the new produce of the land on the day immediately after their 14th-of-th-month celebration of the Passover. If we can use their example, then it appears that they had the same day-of-the-week layout as we do this year, and they did not wait until the next week. I’m going to read these passages a few more times, but this may be the explanation I sought.

  • Nancy Troutman says:

Do we start counting the omar before or after dark on Sunday the 5th?

    • Sunday morning April 5, 2015.

      • Wayne koman says:

Shouldn’t it start after sundown Sunday night on Nissan 16, the day after the High Sabbath (Lev 23:10-16)?

        • Nope. Check out the study on the timing of Shavuot (and the counting of the Omer): https://www.nehemiaswall.com/truth-shavuot

          • Neville says:

I have read your Turth-of-Shavuot study through twice, and tried quite hard to see the key to beginning the count as being “the morrow” and not “the sabbath”. But… I just can’t. in context, the only thing that makes sense to me is that “the sabbath” is referring to the [weekly] sabbath that occurs within the 7 days of ULB. I just don’t see from the scriptural context how the morrow (morning) should occur within ULB if the sabbath to which it is “attached” does not. Since this year, ULB starts immediately after a weekly sabbath, it seems clear to me that the only sabbath-morrow that works in context is [this year] going to be the weekly sabbath which is the final day of ULB. That would make the count-start and Shavuot a week later than your dates. I’m really trying to see it your way, but I just don’t. Can you go deeper on this?

  • Johan Koch says:

Shalom, I would like to establish what “Lev 23:11 ‘And he shall wave the sheaf before יהוה, for your acceptance. On the morrow after the Sabbath the priest waves it.” means, and how does one know which Sabbath if Passover falls on the sabbath, with 1st day of Unlwavened Bread ob the 1st day. Basically the same as this year. What is the rule? According to the Scripture in Lev. 23 I would start counting from 12/04/15 till 31/05/15.
